The following is a list of 18 folks that live a cruelty-free, vegan lifestyle.

For those in a hurry, our list of vegan celebrities includes Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish, Travis Barker, Jared Leto, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Russell Brand, Natalie Portman, Zac Efron, Joaquin Phoenix, Evanna Lynch, Kristen Bell, Tobey Maguire, Ellen Page, Mike Tyson, Ellen Pompeo, and the Venus and Serena Williams sisters.

Also, vegan athletes in the documentary The Game Changers are not listed here. If you want to check them out, Peta made a great list with info about each athlete 🙂

Vegan Musicians

#1 Miley Cyrus (Singer-Songwriter/Actress)

In a 2015 Jimmy Fallon interview, Miley Cyrus explains that she went vegan because of her pet blowfish and pig. She went on to say that she grew a connection to her blowfish and pig and could see that they were both intelligent animals. Then, one day while out with friends at a sushi restaurant, she saw that they were serving blowfish.

When Miley saw the blowfish at the restaurant she started thinking about her own pet blowfish. Empathetically, she remarked on how intelligent an animal her blowfish and pig were and continued the interview.

Here’s the 2 minute and 10 second clip:

#2 Billie Eilish

In 2014, Billie answered the question, “When did you go vegan and why?” on her Tumblr account. Her response (dated back in 2018) says that she went vegan four years ago. At the time of publishing this article, that makes her vegan for six years.

Billie wrote a simple, no-fuss answer to why she became vegan:

“I love animals…”

Additionally, she says that she is lactose intolerant and that her skin doesn’t do well with dairy.

#3 Travis Barker

Famed Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker was a vegetarian since he was a teenager. It was only until after a tragic plane crash he was in that lead him to go full vegan.

In an Associated Press interview, Travis talks about his vegetarian and vegan history.

He says, “I was a vegetarian for years, since I was like 15. I never liked the taste I meat. I didn’t like the texture.”

Shortly after, he talks about his plane crash and his time spent at the hospital. During his hospital stay, he reluctantly ate meat (beef jerky) because he had to eat it to pass the hospital blood count checks. Later on in his stay, ask his friends would come to visit, Travis would ask his friends to take the beef jerky away from him when they’d visit. He simply didn’t want to eat it. Because of this, the hospital staff took notice and had to take action by putting a tube down his throat to feed him.

After he was released from the hospital, he talks about how he entertained the idea of eating meat by going out with his friends who wanted to introduce him to all the food they said he “had been missing out on”.

He tried it and said, “It was the worst. It was gross for me.”

Travis then goes on to say that it was a natural move for him to make the switch from vegetarian to vegan.

#4 Jared Leto (Recording Artist/Actor)

In a YouTube episode of On Air With Ryan Seacrest, Jared Leto speaks a little about his vegan history. During the beginning of the segment, he mentions that he had been vegan for 22 years. Since that particular episode was published in May 2014, that’d make him vegan for 28 years!

Vegan Actors & Actresses

#5 Liam Hemsworth

In 2015, Liam Hemsworth went vegan according to a Business Insider article. The article reveals that the reason why Liam Hemsworth went vegan was mostly for health reasons.

Interestingly enough, under the advice of a nutritionist, it was recommended that he consume more red meat. Reluctant, Liam tried it anyway. This trial period didn’t last long. The Business Insider article quotes him saying that his experience eating more red meat was “the worst I felt”. After that, he did away with eating red meat and has never felt better.

Who was Liam’s inspiration to adapt a vegan diet you ask? Well, that brings us to our next vegan actor, Woody Harrelson.

#6 Woody Harrelson

Katniss Everdeen mentor, Haymitch Abernathy … I mean Jennifer Lawrence’s Hunger Games co-star Woody Harrelson has been practicing a vegan lifestyle for more than 30 years. After doing some research, it’s becoming apparent that Woody may be the most decorated vegan on this list. According to LIVEKINDLY, Woody has sent letters to government officials about animal rights, tried to turn the pope vegan, and has worked with vegan chefs to promote sustainable food.

#7 Russell Brand

Russell Brand is a vegan twice-over. His first attempt at a vegan diet was in 2011 after watching the documentary Forks Over Knives with his then wife Katy Perry.

Sometime after that, and it’s hard to say when, Russell went back to consuming animal products. There isn’t much on the web to pull from, just this most recent 2019 tweet stating that he’s “vegan now (again)”.

#8 Natalie Portman

Actress and Harvard graduate Natalie Portman has been vegetarian since she turned double digits in age and went vegan at age 30.

One of my favorite quotes from Natalie on the topic of veganism and planetary health efforts is from her acceptance speech during the 2017 EMA Awards.

You can make a difference by even once a day or once a week choosing not to eat animals or animal products.

It’s a simple, factual statement that isn’t overwhelming or judgy. I think it’s a sentiment that the average meat-eater can accept and could easily attempt.

#9 Zac Efron

In efforts to slow down the effects of getting older, Zac Efron said in a Teen Vogue interview that he had made some lifestyle changes. One of those lifestyle changes is experimenting with a vegan lifestyle.

I’ve been experimenting with eating purely vegan. That’s completely changed the way that my body works, and the way that I metabolize food, the way it turns into energy, the way that I sleep. It’s been brilliant. It’s been great for my exercise, and great for my routine.

Currently, there are no other sources of information on how Zac’s diet is now, but we wanted to shine a light on those using their star power for good.

#10 Joaquin Phoenix

Recent Joker Joaquin Phoenix says he’s been vegan since he was just 3 years old. It was then when he shared an unforgettable experience he shared with his siblings. Joaquin and his family witnessed fish being killed in a shockingly violent and aggressive manner. After that, he chose not to take part in the consumption of animals.

Joaquin Phoenix on why he is vegan:

More recently, Joaquin has used his resources as an actor and public figure to create some pretty powerful documentaries exposing the animal agriculture industry.

#11 Evanna Lynch

Luna Lovegood …  I mean Evanna Lynch went vegan in 2015. In a LIVEKINDLY article, she remarks on her vegan journey:

It was just the right path for me. I felt like as soon as I went vegan, I was more myself, like I was just living according to what I believed, which is such a freeing thing when you finally commit to it.

Evanna also has a makeup brand that is cruelty-free and vegan called Kinder Beauty. Additionally, she is among the many other amazing humans as a Veganuary Ambassador.

#12 Kristen Bell

According to an Insider article, Kristen Bell was a vegetarian at age 11 and well full on vegan in 2012 after watching the documentary Forks Over Knives.

Watch Kristen Bell take on a some of hottest vegan wings on the Hot Ones YouTube show (August 8, 2019):

#13 Tobey Maguire

A vegan since 2009, Tobey Maguire stated in an interview that eating meat was hardly an adjustment.

Some interesting fun finds about Tobey as it relates to being vegan.

#14 Ellen Page

Proud LGBTQ+ advocate and actress Ellen Page has made headlines with her famous pro-vegan quote against bullying:

Why are vegans made fun of while the inhumane factory farming process regards animals and the natural world merely as commodities to be exploited for profit?

#15 Ellen Pompeo

On-screen Grey’s Anatomy doctor, Ellen Pompeo revealed that she and her family were making a lifestyle switch to a vegan diet in an Instagram post.

Furthermore, she’s explained that her family’s decision to go vegan was for health issues, specifically addressing the United States.

I think we’re at a critical point for our planet and in the United States—this health issue is out of control, the obesity, the diabetes, everything. … Sickness is a huge business; I know that really, really well. The message of veganism is not one that they want to get out, but not only will it help us, it helps the planet.

#16 Mike Tyson

It was a surprising moment for me when I first learned that Mike Tyson went vegan.

In a 2013 Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) interview, Tyson talks about how life changing his vegan lifestyle has been for him.

I just felt like changing my life, doing something different and I became a vegan. And becoming a vegan, it gave me another opportunity to live a healthy life. And I was just horrible, I was so congested from all the drugs and bad cocaine I could hardly breath, high blood pressure, almost dying, and arthritis. Once I became a vegan all that stuff diminished.

#17 & #18 Venus and Serena Williams

According to Vegan Life Mag, Venus Williams transitioned into a raw vegan diet at the recommendation of her doctor. She was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease can Sjogren’s Syndrome, a debilitating condition which causes excessive fatigue.

In sisterly support, Serena Williams joined Venus in maintaining a vegan diet.
